Hyperion ticks all the boxes
I had a misplaced belief that the best science-fiction writing was done in the 'fifties and 'sixties, and I had never heard of 'Hyperion', let alone Dan Simmons, but I picked up a blog on the Best Ever Science Fiction and 'Hyperion' was there in the top ten.

Hyperion started slow, but the story of the pilgrims was pretty interesting.
