Becoming yourself
Granskad i Storbritannien den 29 maj 2023
This novel is a story of a dog named Buck becoming real himself.
It is a shocking painful journey for him, but eventually he adapts to it, and loves it.
Jack London combined three things in a very creative, wonderful way in this novel.
- The Theme : Becoming yourself
- Writing style : sharp, plain, not convoluted, to the point
- Hero of the Novel : a dog.
This combination made the story a page turner, immersing the reader.
Buck used to have a comfortable life living in a Judge's house in Santa Clara Valley, California .
But it was sold by one of the house servants to be sent to gold seekers on Canada who need sled dogs.
There is a gold rush in Canada, and strong sled dogs are valuable assets.
Buck's life changes upside down.
His owners keep changing, some of them are rough, beat dogs with clubs.
He never experienced such a treatment, pain.
And terror does not stop there.
He also need got to deal with other dogs. His instincts drive him to adapt to this harsh life, even he wants to be the leader of the dogs.
Buck has this confidence, drive that he can overcome all this.
In essence, his instincts starts taking over him, he lives as if his ancestors are calling.
London's style of instant, sharp switches changing in the sphere is fantastic.
In the flow of the story, all of a sudden, Buck gets locked up in a cage, beaten by club; this creates instant disturbances, sort of disgust on reader.
But just like Buck, reader also adapts to the flow.
Eventually Buck has a good owner, saving him from hands of inexperienced, crazy owners.
In this way Buck's life is also saved.
In return, Buck saves life of his new owner in a river from getting drawn.
There is huge affection between them. He is like God for Buck.
But Buck starts going into wood, wild sometimes, staying there for days, hunting his own food, and becomes friend with a wolf.
On one of these occasions on his return, he finds out that his owner is killed by Indians; and they are dancing in the camp.
He slaughters a gang of Indians, and goes back to wild for ever; and becomes the leader of the a wolf pack.
A myth starts among Indians that there is a bad spirit dog leading wolfs.
This novel is about fantastic transformation of life.
I understand Jack London had socialist views and there is a debate if his novels are based on Socialist theme.
But this is not a socialist novel, and it is just the opposite.
This is in fact a pure ridiculation of socialism.
Because socialism aims for a secure, sustainable life for the common, ordinary, weak.
None of them neither exist, nor a goal in this novel.
This is a novel of survival of the fittest, driven by instinct, emotions, not consciousness.
This is a novel of not refusing what you are, but accepting what you are.
Socialism is just opposite of all this.
There is far more Nietzsche influence in thus Novel than Socialism.
Jack London pick up a dog as hero for them of becoming yourself was a fantastic idea.
It would have been impossible to get his message across through a human being.
It is a shocking painful journey for him, but eventually he adapts to it, and loves it.

I read this book in Grade 5 (back in the 60's) and bought this book for my 10 year old granddaughter, hoping she would love it as much as I did.....AND SHE DID!!! I highly recommend parents and grandparents order this book so it continues to be "a classic". Hope so.
