A unique legal drama and an entirely new perspective on some of the most famous maritime disasters in history Over a period of four years, four ships were lost under different circumstances and 4,000 lives with them—but one thing links them all: it was John Charles Bigham, Lord Mersey, who was appointed to head the inquiries into each disaster. Mersey is oftern referred to in contemptuous terms in the many Titanic and Lusitania forums, as a "company man," or a government stooge. But is this the whole truth? In themselves these stories are as dramatic as they come; everyone knows about the Titanic and the Lusitania, but the the loss of 104 lives aboard the Falaba when torpedoed by U28 in March 1915, is not so famous—and it really was the preamble to U.S. entry into the war. Did Mersey produce a whitewash for the government in the Lusitania investigation, talking of two or three submarines lying in wait for the Cunarder, telling the nation what it wanted to hear in contradiction of the evidence? Was he biased against Captain Walter Lord of the Californian, the ship that failed to react to the Titanic's distress rockets?

Top of the line resource!!!

I am so impressed by this author's approach to the history he presents. The quality of his skill in keeping a balanced opinion free from presumption and prejudice is literally a breath of fresh air in books relating to Titanic and other disasters. His information is unique in that it focuses on Lord Mersey and the world as it was when confronted by the consequences of leaps in technology. He keeps a tight reign on cause and effect, not losing his footing by preaching on faults or deficiencies of past eras. His desire to help the reader UNDERSTAND and not just know what took place is the book's primary strength. It is a great opportunity to branch out of the mainstream opinion of the industrial age, and learn more about maritime history as it pertained to the time.

Much more than the sinking of the Titanic
Granskad i Storbritannien den 10 maj 2012
The book places the four disasters on which Mersey chaired inquiries into their historical context, looking at peace and wartime risks and the impact of new technology. It concentrates on the captains of the ships involved and how Mersey dealt with them. This enables comparison of the characters and actions of a particular group of men carrying heavy responsibility in extreme situations.

This is an excellent and original work

This is an excellent and original work. The stories of most of these ships have been told before in more detail, and so those looking for the disaster narrative should look elsewhere. Walker chooses to focus on the Inquiries that followed the losses, and specifically on their assessments of the relevant captains (including the two U-boat captains and Lord of the Californian) and their actions as they related to the causes and loss of life. This isn't, however, a dense legal treatise. There is only 170 pages of text, and there are few block quotes from the inquiries. Instead Walker follows the judgment of Lord Mersey, as well as the arguments and defenses put forward by the ship owners, operators, and the British Board of Trade. A number of other personalities recur throughout the narrative, but Mersey convened the inquiry and so his is the threat that Walker follows.
By keeping this narrow focus, Walker is able to probe the actions of the captains as they were perceived by Mersey in reaching judgment. Walker touches on the important issues of how captains must balance risks in an inherently risky occupation, and how changes in technology complicate the duties of command.
The only weakness is in the discussion of the Lusitania. We know that Mersey was personally frustrated with the Lusitania inquiry, and publicly said so, resigning as Wrecks Commissioner after the inquiry was concluded. I suspect Walker's research and insight would have something to say about this, but unfortunately the book ends when the inquiry ends. As with Lord Mersey's Lusitania inquiry itself, we are left wondering what has not been entered into public record.

A great account

I like the style of this book. I couldn't put it down. Four different maritime tragedies analysed in relation to each other. He tells about the ships, the captains and the events surrounding them. Some great 'what ifs' in between the facts. Inspired me to read on with other books.
