I've been waiting for an Autobiog of Jean-Jacques Burnel for years - such a shame we will never get one from Jet Black or Dave Greenfield now. He is actually the only original member of the Stranglers I have never met in person, although I've seen him on stage over 20 times since the 1978 Battersea Park gig.

This book is divided into themed chapters dealing with each separate part of his personal and working life - so you get to hear quite a lot about the early years, his love of the motorbike and Japanese culture and martial arts, plus his upbringing as a Franco/English youth, his loves and band members.

It's (mostly) an entertaining and absorbing read brought to us via many interviews over a year or two and now translated from the French into English after a French only release last year.

For most Stranglers fans (like me) this is a must-have book from, probably, our biggest hero.

4,0 av 5 stjärnor A few things cleared up.

Having been a fan through all the guises of the band l had certain suspicions of personnel and events at various times and the book answered quite a few. For instance - no one is a bigger admirer of Dave Greenfields godlike genius than me...but l had a feeling that, in latter years, his keyboards were lower in the live mix and the keyboard parts he presented were not what we were used to on the records. The rather sad admission in this book paints I'm a picture of a declining Dave who really wasn't in a fit state to continue. Toby Hounsham his replacement and worshipper is now very much up in the mix and plays the Dave bits like Dave did in his prime. There is the usual score settling with Hugh Cornwell. A sort of admission that Paul Roberts was a mistake. And John Ellis is pointed out as the devil 😈 incarnate...but if 'Written in Red' was his creation then no amount of bile is enough.

5,0 av 5 stjärnor The greatest biography ever ?

Not a biography as such , more a collection of stories , through a series of interviews with one of the greatest bass players ever. Originally published in French now translated into English . Love it
