I really looked forward to reading this. Alas, I'm struggling and most likely will not finish. Freya Stark, a free-spirited English woman in the early 1900s, traveled trails never before open to travelers, let alone a lone woman! I expected rich descriptions of the places and people. These are there, but I have little idea of where she traveled. It stated in the introduction to the book that she not only traveled where other women and men had not, she also drew fabulous maps, many the first ever done of regions. However, nowhere is a map of the areas visited in The Valley of the Assassins included in the book. Without that essential reference, I'm unable to orient myself as a read. A must for me. Even a map not draw by Freya would have been nice. Perhaps readers in the years up to the 1940s and earlier were acquainted with the areas she describes. Sadly, I'm not as the boundaries in those areas have changed frequently in the last 60+ years.
