Was gibt auf dem Markt vom "Orlando" (historische Aufführungspraxis)? Nicht so viel (in einer aufsteigender Reihenfolge):

My first impression of this recording was very enthusiastic--excellent singing and sound. But in deference to another Amazon reviewer, I decided that I should listen to the Atma recording  ]. I've now done that, and I definitely recommend this performance by Rene Jacobs, Bejun Mehta, et al.

The Atma recording is very good, but as Orlando, Owen Willets just isn't on a par with Mehta, whose sound is much richer. Kristina Hammarstrom, who shines as Daniel in Jacobs' DVD of Belshazzar, is equally top-notch as Dorinda. And Konstantin Wolff excels as Zorastro, as he does in Christie's DVD.

At the New York Times website, Anthony Tommasini writes, "For me, `Orlando' is Handel's most innovative and psychologically astute opera, and one of his richest scores. . . . René Jacobs, the countertenor turned brilliant conductor, leads a crisp, stylish and immediate performance with the B'Rock Orchestra Ghent and an appealing cast, starring the countertenor Bejun Mehta in the title role, Sophie Karthäuser as his love interest Angelica, and Konstantin Wolff as the magician Zoroastro."

I know that as a Handel lover I should be incensed by Jacobs' addition of harp, lute, and organ to the continuo, but I can't. It all seems appropriate -- not like Beecham's (or even Mozart's) additions to Messiah. If you think that it will bother you, however, get the Atma recording, or stick with the classic choice: Hogwood, Bowman, and Kirkby on Decca
].

The Christie DVD
] is well sung but spoiled by being set in a hospital.

5,0 av 5 stjärnor Superb peformance with profundity
Granskad i Storbritannien den 15 oktober 2014
These CDs represent to me the new stage of the development of the performance of Handel’s operas with Faramondo by Fasolis, Giulio Cesare at Glyndebourne, and Alcina at the Vienna Opera. So far it was difficult for me to understand this work which great Handel scholars like Paul Henry Lang evaluate as one of Handel’s greatest operas. However, the very beginning of the overture of the CDs attracted me into a pleasing, but mysterious world with profundity.
Rene Jacobs’ conducting makes the performance great. He adds the sound of wind and storm to emphasize the importance of the power of nature which was rather ignored in the performance at the Zurich Opera. The ensemble of B’rock Orchestra is delicate enough to support the fine singing of the five marvelous singers. Particularly attractive is Sunhae Im, who acts as Dorinda, a shepherdess who is simple, kind and faithful, but finally unrewarded. All of her arias are wonderful but I was struck when I heard her singing of ‘amor e qual vento’ in the third act.
Orlando is full of originality and Rene Jacobs succeeded in expressing the complex composition of words written not only as arias and recitatives, but as accompagnatos, a cavatina, an arioso, and a duettino, which makes the work as a united whole.
The recording is beautiful, using great technique established by Deutsche Grammophon.
I sincerely recommend these CDs to those who have never recognized the beauty of this work, but would like to understand its greatness.
